Since announcing the City’s plan to celebrate four anniversary centennials, the City of Timmins and the 100th Community Anniversary Committee continue to harness support from the corporate community, the service clubs and from local organizations and public institutions such as the Timmins High & Vocational School.
According to Mayor Tom Laughren “This community partner has taken an interest in many City activities over the years, and in fact this pavilion is an example of their support. Today, I’m happy to unveil yet another project that was completed for the City by members of Dino Colasacco’s welding class; a custom made aluminum trailer including a large scale, 3 dimensional, full colour, 100th Community Anniversary Logo, complete with spot lights for night time use. This mobile display will be used to promote the City’s 100th Community Anniversary Celebrations from a number of events, throughout the community, through to December 31, 2012. It will be entered in a number of parades and parked outside high traffic areas helping to build “top of mind” awareness of our community celebrations, day and night, all year round”
“As Mayor, and on behalf of the members of the City’s 100th Community Anniversary Committee, I want to acknowledge and personally thank the following individuals who dedicated time, energy and passion to the project.
- Dino Colasacco, Shop Teacher TH & VS - Aaron Gagnon, project lead, main designer and fabricator - Richard Daigle, main designer and fabricator - Jeremy Long, Albert Souriol, & John Gorman, assistant fabricators, and electrical - Fran’s Body Shop for providing professional advice and assisting with the painting
I’m told that the students spent countless hours after school, designing, and fabricating the many parts and components required to complete the assignment. In total, some 80 man hours were invested in the project.”
According to TH&VS Shop Teacher Dino Colasacco, “This project was an interesting project for the class. It allowed the participating students to hone their fabrication, welding, grinding and painting skills. The intricacies associated with this assignment also put into practice, much of the theory that is thought in class including geometry, trigonometry and algebra. For some, it developed artistic awareness. By engaging the student population in community projects such as this one, we are instilling civic pride and developing community values that will be beneficial to society in the long run. As a teacher, I am proud to be a part of this community. Giving back through volunteer efforts is my way of showing appreciation to a City that has endured tough times, and one that has accepted countless cultures with open arms. I know I speak for the students when I say that they believe that giving back to the community they call home is a contribution to its future, community pride and well being.”
“From the onset, we knew that community support of a four year celebration was crucial to the success of the multi-year event. We are grateful for the TH &VS contribution. The generous financial contributions received from the corporate community in support of the centennial celebrations combined with the commitment and work of the many organizations who have agreed to host a new event or enhance an existing event in the spirit of the City’s four year celebration, have benefited the residents and visitors of the City of Timmins. During the first two years of our four year celebration many exciting and innovative events, such as the Great Canadian Kayak Challenge & Festival, the Summer Concert Series and may more have been launched in the community to celebrate our milestones” said Mayor Tom Laughren today at a Media Conference. “
It’s expected that the trailer will be used by the City well after the anniversary celebrations. As importantly, the aluminum, stylized scaled version of the anniversary logo can be displayed from a City facility beyond 2012 reminding future generations of our many successes and impressive milestones.
