Today, Mayor Tom Laughren, Chair of the 100th Community Anniversary Committee, announced the launch of a 10 week outdoor summer concert series in partnership with Midnight Express Productions and DJ Services and Title Sponsor NorthernTel, a division of Bell Aliant.

"The TH&VS Pavillion located at Hollinger Park will serve as a staging area for local performers who will be invited to perform in the Summer Concert Series . Every Wednesday beginning on June 30th and ending Sept 1, 2010 a live outdoor concert featuring local talent will be offered free of charge to the residents and visitors of Timmins. All performances will begin at 7 p.m. and end at 8:30 p.m. during a 10 week period" added Mayor Tom Laughren.

According to Luc Chalifoux, Proprietor, Midnight Express "we are proud to
co-sponsor this initiative with the City's 100th Community Anniversary Committee. We are determined to encourage and promote local performers of all genres by giving them a venue to perform in and ideally good community support and attendance."

"The Hollinger Park is a perfect place to host the Summer Concert Series with many commercial outlets located nearby. These free concerts in the park will allow residents to enjoy the music from the comfort of their lawn chairs. This event will appeal to families knowing that the age of majority is not required. After several years of searching, we have identified a viable venue, exceptional partners and established community support for this event. We are thrilled to see our dream for a musical talent night become reality" added Mr. Chalifoux.

"We're hoping that all Timmins media outlets will support this initiative through timely promotions. I look forward to developing a marketing strategy that will reflect their input and one that recognizes their support. I will be discussing this opportunity with media partners in the near future "added Guy Lamarche, Municipal Communications Coordinator.

Musicians wishing to participate in the Summer Concert Series are invited to submit an application form and demo. The application form which includes guidelines will be available at www.timmins100.ca beginning Friday, March 26th and will be received by the selection committee to 12 noon on April 16th. Once all applications have been received, the selection committee will review each submission, listen to all demos and score each application according to criteria. A decision will be made accordingly. All applications will be considered, with "genre" being extremely important to the overall assessment. Once the 10 groups have been confirmed, the committee will upload the list of confirmed performers to the anniversary web site and a media release will be issued announcing the Summer Concert Series line-up .

"NorthernTel is pleased to partner with the City's 100th Anniversary Committee and Midnight Express and to showcase two of our local attractions here in Timmins: Our vast array of musical talent and the Hollinger Park," said Suzanne Pettigrew, Team Lead, NorthernTel Customer Care. "I couldn't think of a more natural setting for this Summer Concert Series and look forward to many more in the years to come!"

"Members of the City's 100th Community Anniversary Committee are extremely pleased to support another 100th Community Anniversary event and we are confident that the Summer Concert Series will bring the community together once again during the celebration of our city milestones. This type of family event is exactly the type of activity one expects to see during a time of celebration. Our community is blessed with musical talent and that is evident when you listen to the CD produced in celebration of our centennials. For me, the Summer Music Series is a natural extension of the anniversary CD, 100 Years in the Making, Timmins Celebrates its Music, Volume 1 and an opportunity to showcase our homegrown talent" conclude Mayor Laughren.
