The first shipment of the City’s four commemorative 100th Community Anniversary Wines available for purchase since May 15 of this year, were extremely well received by the residents of Timmins and sold out quickly with over 5,000 bottles purchased. The first shipment of wines commemorated “100 Years of Mining 1909 – 2009”.
The City confirms that a second shipment bearing a slightly different private label and drawing attention to “100 Years of Mining Production, 1910 – 2010”, will be available for purchase beginning Thursday Oct 28 and for all of 2010. Both the Timmins and South Porcupine LCBO outlets will be stocking their shelves with anniversary wines once again.
According to Guy Lamarche, coordinator of the wine project, “we are extremely pleased with the brisk sales of this product and the positive comments that many of us have received from the residents who have purchased these wines.” After evaluating 89 wineries and sampling over 40 different wines, a committee of local wine connoisseurs recommended that the City consider East Dell’s Black Cabernet, Dan Aykroyd’s Cabernet Shiraz, East Dell’s Pinot Grigio and finally Birchwood’s Gewurztraminer/ Reisling. The latter , a slow seller by comparison, has been replaced by an East Dell Unoaked Chardonnay, a close contender during the initial sampling and selection process.
Diamond Estates Wines and Spirits Ltd, a Toronto based distributor, was selected to bring these 100th anniversary wines home to our table and also agreed to invest .50 cents from each bottle sold towards the anniversary celebrations or towards an anniversary legacy project.
Mayor Laughren, Chair of the 100th Community Anniversary Celebrations is pleased to see the shelves of the local LCBO stores replenished with anniversary wines, and this, just in time for the holidays. “The four year partnership between the City of Timmins and Diamond Estates is off to a good start. Based on the early sales figures, I anticipate that a generous profit from this project will be realized and reinvested in the community” added the Mayor
