Felix Mendelssohn (1809-47) was one of the greatest Early Romantic composers. Masterpieces from his musical output include the Violin Concerto in E-minor, the 3rd and 4th symphonies, and the incidental music to "A Midsummer Nights Dream". His string quartets are some of the greatest chamber works ever written, each possessing a humanity and energy that can be easily appreciated.
For the Silver Birch String Quartet's debut performance in Timmins, they will be performing Mendelssohn's Opus 13 String quartet. This is his first quartet, written when he was 18, and follows in the footsteps of Beethoven's breathtaking late string quartets. Beethoven's influence is everpresent in the Mendelssohn quartets, and this cycle is very much the spiritual successor to Beethoven's cycle of quartets. Opus 12 is a spectacularly romantic quartet with an operatic slow movement, and the three Opus 44 quartets are full of emotion and excitement. The cycle is completed with Mendelssohn's Opus 80 String Quartet; a dark, seldom-performed masterpiece, full of power and emotion. This was the only major work that Mendelssohn wrote between the sudden, shocking death of his beloved sister Fanny, and his own death only six months later.
Aside from the great works of Mendelssohn, there will be a few surprise extras at each concert. Come out and be a part of what might be the biggest Chamber Music event in the history of Timmins!
