Welcome from Mayor Tom Laughren

Mayor Tom LaughrenAs you know the City of Timmins will be celebrating four years of centennials beginning in 2009. Each milestone represents an historical point for the City of Timmins. In 2009 the City will be celebrating the discovery of gold in the Porcupine Camp. 2010 marks the 100th Anniversary of the production of the major mines (Hollinger, McIntyre and the Dome) and the beginning marks the 100th South Porcupine, Schumacher, Porcupine, Pottsville, and Golden City; 2011 commemorates the great Porcupine Fire and 2012 marks the 100th Anniversary of the incorporation of the Town of Timmins.

The anniversary celebrations will be a great time for us to look back at the story of the Porcupine, the history of Timmins, the people who live here, and a time where each of us can search for a new understanding of the history that produced our present while reflecting on the prosperous future that lies ahead.

We have much to celebrate. The Porcupine Gold Rush of 1909 is said to be the largest gold rush ever. By 2001, the Porcupine Camp had mined over 67 million ounces of gold compared to the 12 million ounces produced during the well known Klondike Gold Rush. From the discovery of gold, and other precious metals such as nickel, copper, zinc, silver and diamonds, history seems to repeat itself and the City with a Heart of Gold, continues to reap the benefits of this exploration fever. 100 years later interest in the Timmins region is at an all time high with prospectors, developers, and after market mine related manufacturers finding their way here in search of prosperity.  The discovery of gold in 1909 helped to shape our community and the many things that define it. Today Timmins enjoys a quality of life that is often the envy of many. Our colorful past helped to shape our promising future.

To help the community celebrate these milestones, the 100th Community Anniversary Committee has invited community groups to consider hosting exciting and innovative events that will promote the upcoming centennial celebrations like none other.

I also want to acknowledge and thank the many corporate sponsors listed on the anniversary site for their generous support of these celebrations.  As a result of their generosity, the 100th Community Anniversary Committee will be able to organize a celebration that will span four years and one that will enlighten and enrich residents, past and present.

As Mayor of the City of Timmins, it gives me great pleasure to invite you to the main events that will be held throughout our community as we celebrate these noteworthy milestones.
