TIMMINS, ON: In the near future, it might not just be real-estate moguls snapping up property in the City of Timmins.

Hasbro, makers of the popular board game Monopoly, has launched a nationwide vote to choose Canadian cities to appear on the new Monopoly Canada board game. Although Timmins was not one of the sixty-five pre-selected Canadian cities chosen for the top-20 city vote, residents still have the opportunity to put Timmins on the board by nominating the City with the Heart of Gold as a wildcard.

Canadian Mining Hall of Fame Recognizes Timmins Prospectors

TIMMINS, ON: As Timmins celebrates four years of centennials, early prospectors that claimed stake in the future of the City with the Heart of Gold are being recognized for their contributions to the Canadian mining industry and will be inducted to the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame.

Benny Hollinger, Sandy McIntyre and Jack Wilson will be honoured at the Canadian Mining Hall of Fameâs 22nd annual induction ceremony, to be held Thursday, January 14, 2010, at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel, Toronto.

Limited Edition 100th Anniversary Music CD Goes on Sale

As part of the City's ongoing efforts to celebrate its colourful past, a project engaging musicians that are currently living in the City or who came from here, was undertaken last June. Musicians from the region with an affinity for life in Timmins would also be considered for inclusion on the CD.

Second Shipment of Anniversary Wines Expected Soon

The first shipment of the Cityâs four commemorative 100th Community Anniversary Wines available for purchase since May 15 of this year, were extremely well received by the residents of Timmins and sold out quickly with over 5,000 bottles purchased. The first shipment of wines commemorated â100 Years of Mining 1909 â 2009â.

The City confirms that a second shipment bearing a slightly different private label and drawing attention to â100 Years of Mining Production, 1910 â 2010â, will be available for purchase beginning Thursday Oct 28 and for all of 2010. Both the Timmins and South Porcupine LCBO outlets will be stocking their shelves with anniversary wines once again.

Shania Twain Named Community Torchbearer for Olympic Flame

Timmins Olympic Community Celebration Committee names Vancouver 2010 Community Torchbearer for Timmins Olympic Flame to arrive in Timmins on January 1st, 2010.

TIMMINS, ON: When the Olympic Flame arrives in Timmins in just 92 days time, and on the 64th day of the cross Canada Olympic Relay, it will be proudly carried by a Torch Bearer nominated by the Timmins Olympic Community Celebration Committee as our community torchbearer to light the celebration cauldron for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay.

The Timmins Leg of the Olympic Flame Torch Relay will begin in Porcupine, Ontario. Carried by runners selected by our relay partners; Coca-Cola and RBC, the Olympic Torch will wind its way westbound through our community to our Olympic Flame Celebration at the Hollinger Park.

Whitney & Tisdale Townships Celebrating 100 Years!

Clubs, organizations, businesses, present and former residents are all invited to share their ideas for a Whitney & Tisdale Township Homecoming proposed for the summer of 2010. The event will honour the 1910 establishment of all the communities in these two Townships, as part of Year Two of the City of Timminsâ 100th Anniversary celebrations.

Timmins 100th Anniversary Song

Back in June of this year, the Timmins 100th Community Anniversary Committee, along with local radio stations Q92 and EZ Rock, sponsored the Timmins 100th Anniversary Song Contest. We were looking for a song to celebrate our great cityâs milestones and reflect the rich heritage of the area.

The contest closed on July 31st. The top four entries were selected and then voted on by the citizens of Timmins.

Over the Hill columnist Diane Armstrongâs submission was a hit with the community and was chosen as the winning song. Dianeâs lyrics and melody will be featured on the Timmins 100th Anniversary Compilation CD.

Other finalists included Lynda Dukacz and duo, Susan Tesluk and Eric Bouchard.

We thank everyone who submitted their work and those who took the time to listen and vote.

100th Anniversary Mural: 100 Faces with a Heart of Gold

As part of the 100th Anniversary Celebrations for the City of Timmins, the City invites residents to nominate past or present residents whoâs portrait may be included on a mural to portray 100 Faces with a Heart of Gold.

Nominations are being accepted now until October 15, 2009 by the Cityâs 100th Anniversary History Committee. In November 2009 the Committee will announce the 100 residents selected to be included on a mural to be created by local artist Paulette Brzozwski. Paulette, a local teacher, has volunteered her talent for this project. âThe mural will take me approximately two years to create. Each person takes approximately 30 hours to paintâ.
