Jack & The Rippers performing at the Hollinger Park at the 2010 Summer Concert Series
This year, 26 local musicians submitted an application to be considered in the 2011 outdoor Summer Concert Series scheduled to take place from the TH&VS Pavilion at Hollinger Park, every Wednesday beginning June 29th and ending on August 31st. Last year’s event featured 10 local groups and it’s estimated that the 2010 concert series attracted some 8,000 people to Hollinger Park. This year, organizers are incorporating a “warm up” act to the weekly concerts providing an opportunity for a greater number of musicians.
“Based on the success of last year’s event, I’m not surprised to see so many musicians apply to be considered in this year’s lineup. After carefully reviewing the submissions and rating each according to criteria including genre, eliminating 6 groups from a pool of 26 applications was extremely difficult. After carefully accessing the situation and understanding the benefits that the Summer Concert Series has on the City’s performing arts, the committee chose to include all applicants into this year’s lineup” said Luc Chalifoux of Midnight Express and co-host of the Summer Concert Series. “To this end, music will flow from Hollinger Park from 6:00pm to approximately 9:00pm each week.”
According to Mayor Laughren, “there is a huge appetite from the community, and obviously, from the musicians for this event. The generous corporate support from Northern Tel, Royal Tire/ Sailun Tires, co host Midnight Express, and our media partners has allowed us to go forward with an enhanced Summer Concert Series that will now feature a minimum of 2 groups per week, with some weeks seeing up to three performances.”
The public call to action inviting musicians to submit an application resonated with groups from Moonbeam, Smooth Rock Falls, Cochrane and Iroquois Falls. “We received 4 applications from musicians living in the “greater Timmins” area and they have been invited to perform. This is great news for the City and our tourism industry.
I expect that these bands will attract residents from their communities to the Summer Concert Series and this will generate incremental sales for the hospitality and retail sectors” said Guy Lamarche, Manager Tourism, Events & Communications. ”
